Spring Term 1- Movers and Shakers

What makes a pioneer?

In this project, Year 2 will be sailing with Columbus as he voyages around the world on his travels; they will be launching into space with Neil Armstrong; standing up for woman's rights with Emmeline Pankhurst and fighting for equal rights with Rosa Parks as well as exploring significant individuals in the local area. They will create newspaper reports, setting descriptions and narratives based on their findings as well as creating timelines to show how explorers, activists and other significant others have changed the course of history over the years.

Week Beginning 3rd January 2022

As part of our Movers and Shakers topic, we have been researching information about significant people from the past. We worked together to find out information about them and then sorted them according to what type of pioneer they were.

As part of our Movers & Shakers project 2B have learnt about and discussed significant people through history. We used our knowledge of number and place value to order the pioneers on a timeline in chronological order.

Week Beginning 10th January 2022

This week, we have been learning about two explorers- Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus.

We learnt about the Apollo 11 space mission to the moon and are in the process of writing a newspaper report using the facts we have researched. In History, we also learnt all about the life and achievements of Christopher Columbus from his early years right through to the impact of his voyages and explorations.

Week beginning 17th January 2022

Today we used an app called Strip Design to make a comic strip of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. We learnt how to take relevant photos for the comic strip, edit and format them and even added graphics and speech bubbles with famous quotes in.

In History this week, we enjoyed chronologically ordering the life events of Christopher Columbus & Neil Armstrong and also compared their explorations.

Week Beginning 24th January 2022

Year 2 have been talking about facts and opinions and learning about the difference between them. They learnt about Emmeline Pankhurst and sorted statements about her into two groups, FACTS and OPINIONS.

Year 2 have also been learning about more significant activists and researching information on them to find out what they did, why they were famous, what changes they made and so much more.

Week Beginning 7th February 2022

In Science this week we have been learning about germs, how they spread and how important it is to wash our hands and have good hygiene. We covered our hands in chalk to represent the germs (so we could see them) and then did a few activities to se how easily they spread.

During our Art sessions, we have been looking at still life paintings by various artists. We used fruit and other objects ourselves to sketch the fruit including using shading and then practised our colour mixing skills to paint a given piece.
