Week Beginning 30/11/2020

Hello Year 5,

Unfortunately, our bubble has closed. However, don't worry because Miss Cobb and I have lots of activities planned for you. Mr Clarke has put a timetable on the website to show you what you need to do each day. You will have maths, English and one other lesson each day.

If you are in Miss Cobb's maths group - use the year 1 maths lessons.

If you are in Mrs Andrew's maths group - use the year 4 maths lessons.

Everyone else will need to use the year 5 lessons.

These lessons will be as close as possible to what we should have been doing in school this week.

We have also set you a daily challenge. Send us lots of photos of you completing them. Parents can email them or tweet them to show us.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Miss Campling and Miss Cobb

Any work and photos can now be sent to

thanks

Reading - Read your school reading book again.

Can you summarise the book or part of the book in 1 paragraph?

Write this in your exercise book.

English - Grammar

Today we are looking at relative clauses. We started looking at these last week.

A relative clause adds information to a sentence.

It is a subordinate clause because it doesn't make sense on its own.

It MUST start with a relative pronoun or a relative adverb.

Have a look at the information below and complete pages 13, 16, 17, 18 and 19 in your Grammar book.

Project - This is for Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

Complete as much as you can.

Innovate

The United Nations are asking you as a world-famous scientist to create a super minibeast to rid the world of a super, strong aphid.  It is destroying the world’s crops and diminishing food supplies to the human population.

You must create a super beast to control or exterminate the problem aphid.

1. Plan your super mini-beast.

Computing- Research common aphids and who they create a problem for. Research different aphid predators and make notes for your own design creature.

2. Art- design and draw (give it a name).

Label its characteristics and skills. Think how it may be adapted to exterminate the aphid. What makes it more powerful? Is there anything from the deadly minibeasts work that you could do? Have a think about the banana spider or the puss caterpillar.

3. D&T- make a model of your mini-beast.

Use what you have at home. Is there anything in the recycling you could use? If you cannot do this at home, don't worry.

4. Science- Create a fact-file page of your mini-beast for the Science encyclopaedia.

Wednesday

Today's challenge - Find 5 green objects.

Times Tables

Maths - We are moving onto a new unit today. The first lesson is about perimeter.

Perimeter is the distance around the edge of a shape. We can find it by adding the sides together. Don't forget to find the length of missing sides.

You may need to use properties of a shape: -

  • A square has 4 equal sides.
  • A rectangle has 2 sets of equal sides.

Also complete the next page in your 10 minute maths book.

Reading - 30 mins reading your 'Reading for pleasure' book. This can be on your own, to an adult, an adult reading to you or with a sibling. Have fun!

English - This week and next we will be writing a narrative.

Create a fantasy story about your favourite minibeast from its first glimpse of the world and awakening in its home. You could put yourself in the position of the mini-beast and write it in the first person.

Think about using a story mountain to plan the different paragraphs. Such as: the beginning to introduce your character and setting the scene. Introducing the problem and the build-up, could this be in the form of a predator.

Today, you need to make a list of features of a narrative. Think about what we did for the tomb story in Pharaohs.

Use a story mountain to plan your story. You need 5 paragraphs.

1. Opening - Are you writing from the minibeast's point of view? How do you feel? What can you see around you? What features can you use in this paragraph?

2. Build up - Where can you go that leads to the dilemma? How are you going to make the reader want to carry on reading? Is your minibeast going towards danger?

3. Dilemma - What is going to go wrong? What is the danger?

4. Resolution - how is the problem solved?

5. Ending - What sort of ending is it?

Project - This is for Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

Complete as much as you can.

Times Table

Maths - Perimeter

We are looking at calculating perimeter again today.

Look at the video and answer some of the questions at the end of the video. You can write them in your exercise book.

Page 49 of your maths book.

Can you measure the perimeter of anything around your house? a book? your bedroom?

You do not have to use standard measure. It could be footsteps around your bedroom or handspans around the table.

Reading - Read a book of your choice.

English

Today we are writing the opening and build up of our narrative.

What to including in your opening: -

  • Capital letters and full stops
  • Does it make sense?
  • Fronted adverbial - you could use when
  • Modal verb
  • Short and long sentences

After a long sleep, I opened my eyes. Something felt strange. Where was I? This couldn't be right. I remember going to sleep a couple of weeks earlier; I curled up my long body and built a home around myself (I needed to stay safe). My legs felt funny and something was on my back. I decided to wriggle out and see what was going on outside. I popped my head over the top of the cocoon and my new limbs unfolded. I had wings.

Things to include in your build up: -

Something needs to happen to move towards your dilemma.

  • Expanded noun phrase
  • Fronted adverbial
  • Preposition
  • Parenthesis (if this is your target).

All of a sudden, I realised I knew what to do with them. I raised them into the air and felt my body being lifted into the air. I felt as though I was on a cloud. I was flying. My beautiful blue wings with white spots had made my dream come true ( I had always wanted to be a butterfly). After a few moments, I really got the hang of it and floated elegantly around the beautiful garden. From the sky, I could see the picturesque views of the fields. I could hear the birds tweeting above me. The droplets of water from the morning rain had settle on the spiders webs. I decided to go closer for a look.

It's your turn now. Create your first two paragraphs. I can't wait to read them. Please feel free to email them to me.

PSHE - Borrowing money.

Have a look at the powerpoint about borrowing money. Talk to your family.

Is it a good idea to borrow money?

Who can we borrow from?

Do you always have to pay it back?

What is interest on borrowed money?

Is it worth it for a mortgage?

How about if you needed a bike for work?

When would it not be sensible to borrow money?

Friday

Today's challenge is to do a random act of kindness. What could you do for someone in your house? Or write a letter to someone?

Times Tables

Maths

Today we are doing arithmetic. Complete 3 of your 10 min weekly workouts and check the answers. Use the time you have left to go on times tables rock stars.

Reading - Read a book of your choice for 30 mins.

Reading Comprehension

In your comprehension book, read the information about Pompeii. (pages 14 and 15)

Use a dictionary or an online dictionary to find the meaning of any words you do not understand.

Answer the questions in your book.

Have a lovely afternoon with your family!
