Frozen Kingdoms

Exploring the Arctic and the Antarctic

To begin their journey into the frozen kingdoms, year 6 used iPads and google maps to locate the polar regions. They then worked collaboratively with their partner to locate the poles in an atlas. Discussions were had to find similarities and differences between the 2 areas. The children then took a closer look at the seasons, climate, vegetation and topography for each region. The final activity looked at how and why polar day and polar night occur. Recapping on their previous companion project ‘our changing world’ knowledge, the children worked in groups to explain how the Earth’s rotation and tilt affected temperatures and daylight hours.

Ask your child to explain Polar day and Polar night.

Climate Change

Year 6 took a closer look at climate change this week: the contributing factors and the effects of human activity. Working in groups, they all took a key part in presenting their research to an audience.

Ask your child what climate zones there are in the world.

Innovate

As part of their innovate session, year 6 worked collaboratively to bring together all their knowledge and understanding from the Frozen Kingdoms project. Having been set the challenge of creating an advertising magazine, they worked as a team to create a range of articles, including Polar day and night, landscapes, animals in the Arctic, classification keys for Arctic birds. Once the articles were created, each group had to create a magazine using organisational features to present it. They did a fabulous job and were very proud of their product.

Ask your child to tell you an amazing fact about the Arctic Circle.
