Processed Food
Year 6 started their new DT companion project looking at processed foods. Using food packaging, they compared the traffic light food labels and the food’s content of sugar, salt and fat.
Designing a healthy meal
Following on from their first lesson, year 6 planned their own healthy menu. They had to include whole foods and their previous knowledge of the ‘eatwell’ plate to ensure their menu had a range of different food groups, minimal processed foods and would contribute to a balanced diet.
Comparing processed and homemade foods
Year 6 took part in food preparation activities to compare the advantages and disadvantages of cooking with whole foods, and the differences in taste. Each group prepared the vegetables for 2 pasta sauces as well as making their own whole meal bread roll.
The next step ( and the best bit) will be to cook and taste compare.
Evaluating our dishes
After preparing homemade foods, Year 6 evaluated each product. They compared the ingredients, advantages and disadvantages of each dish, discussing how each fitted into a healthy balanced diet.
