Autumn Term 1 - Bright Lights, Big City!

Would you rather go to London or Rio de Janeiro? Why?

In the Bright Lights, Big City project, the children will take part in a royal garden party and learn about Queen Elizabeth II. They will learn about the countries that make up the United Kingdom, including their location, capital cities and some of their physical and human features. They will have the opportunity to do map work, using compasses and positional and directional language to plan routes around London. They will research the cause and impact of the Great Fire of London and look at some famous London landmarks. They will learn about other capital cities around the world, including Kuala Lumpur, and compare how they are similar and different to London.

The children will also take part on the companion project of ‘Taxi’, which is a design and technology project and will teach the children about wheels, axles and chassis and how they work together to make a vehicle move.

20/10/2021 - WOW Event

This afternoon, Year 2 invited parents and carers into school to help them with making their own Taxi Cab. The children have spent this week looking at axles, chassis and wheels on existing vehicles, then designing their own. It was a great afternoon with everybody working together to create an amazing end product.

13/10/2021 - Computing

This morning, Year 2R applied their knowledge of programming and directions to instruct a BeeBot to move around a grid containing London Landmarks. They had to debug their own programs if they did not quite reach their destination and work as a group to make it along their routes.

08/10/2021 - English

This morning, the children in 2R shared their narratives with their peers in 2B. They read fluently and added expression to their work and it was a lovely celebration after the last two weeks of planning, drafting, editing and publishing their work.

06/10/2021 - Art and Design

This afternoon, Year 2R created their own stencils of a London skyline from the 17th century and then used pastels to create a scene from the Great Fire of London. They had to use the pastels in different ways to create the flames from the immense fire.

05/10/2021 - PSHE

This afternoon, Year 2R continued their work in PSHE looking at what makes a good friend and how they can find help when a friendship is making them feel sad. They created posters today to display their suggestions on how to find help when a friendship is making them feel sad.

30/10/2021 - English

This week, Year 2R have been finding features in a narrative text and have now been planning their own. They selected images of Marley on his travels around London; visiting landmarks and spotting important people and then put these into a logical order. Next week they will be writing and editing their narratives and reading them with 2B to compare their stories.

28/09/2021 - PSHE

Year 2R continued their work in PSHE this afternoon around what makes a good friend. They had to think carefully today about the words conflict and compromise. They learnt about how in friendships and in life you have to compromise sometimes in order to avoid conflict. The children took turns to act out situations where they had to compromise and demonstrated these in front of their peers.

27/09/2021 - English

Today, the children in Year 2R listened to a story of Marley the Meerkat on his journey around London based on the work they completed last week! They then had to unscramble some storyboard pictures into the correct sequence based on what they could remember of the story. Finally, they had to group the parts of the story into beginning, middle and end as would be typically seen in a narrative.

21/09/2021 - PSHE

This term in PSHE, Year 2R have been looking at friendships and discussing what actions make somebody a good friend. Today, they had to sort different actions and behaviours into friendly and unfriendly groups.

20/09/2020 - English

This afternoon, the children met Marley the Meerkat as part of their innovate week and were asked to help them decide what to pack when they visited London taking into account the different seasons of the year. They had to sort clothes into different times of the year and then make a note of these to help Marley decide what to pack for their visit.

15/09/2021 - Computing

This afternoon, Year 2 were very lucky to have Mr Carlton come into school and work with them. After looking at directions in English this week, they applied their knowledge to the Bee-Bot app on the Ipads and had to complete challenges using directions.

14/09/2021 - English

This week, the children in Year 2 are looking at directions. They have already followed some directions for moving between two landmarks on a map of London. Today, they created their own set of directions for moving between two more landmarks in London.

10/09/2021 - Memorable Experience

This morning, the children in Years 1 and 2 came into school in their finest clothing ready for a garden tea party similar to the ones which the Queen hosts in her residences. They made their own crowns, worked together to make some bunting and then enjoyed a picnic on the field.

08/09/2021 - English

A very productive and engaging lesson in Year 2R this morning, as the children started to gather together their learning and information from the previous two days to create their informative poster all about Queen Elizabeth II. Today's task was to create the heading, label the picture and then create a list of some of the Queen's favourite things. All the while thinking about their capital letters, full stops and spacing between words.

07/09/2021 - Geography

As part of their project, the children had to identify human features of their local environment. So, both Year 2 classes joined together and walked around Spilsby searching for human features in the local area and checking them off of a list to see how many they could find.

06/09/2021 - English

A great start to their project in Year 2R. The children watched a video all about Queen Elizabeth II and read some information to work in groups to create notes of the facts they had found. These will be useful when they create their own informative posters later in the week.
