Year 1 (2024-2025)

Hello and welcome to Year 1!

We cannot wait to welcome you into Year 1 in September and are looking forward to a very exciting year ahead. Here are some key information points that will get your child ready.

Year 1 class staff:

Miss Poxon will be the class teacher in Year 1 this year. We are very fortunate to be supported by Miss Ambridge and Mrs Porter, who both have experience in Year 1.

Uniform:

Please ensure that your child wears the correct uniform to school by following our uniform policy as detailed on our website. https://www.spilsbyprimary.org.uk/school-uniform/  . If your child has long hair, please ensure it is tied back and that any bows are of small size and blue in colour.

We are limited on spare clothes that we keep within school so please send spare underwear and a spare set of clothes in with your child in their book bags just in case they may need to change. If your child does happen to borrow any clothes from school, please return them washed so we can keep a stock for emergencies.

Please also remember to bring a coat to school even if the weather looks fine in the morning as this can change throughout the day and we like to go outside for playtimes when we can. On hot days (which we appreciate are rare), please send in sun cream and a sun hat.

A desperate plea from us………PLEASE REMEMBER TO LABEL ALL ITEMS!

PE:

In Year 1, we will be having PE on ____ and ____. Just as they did in Reception, we are asking that the children come to school wearing their PE kit on these days. As this PE kit will be classed as their school uniform on these days, we ask that you ensure it is the school PE kit as briefed on the website, including black trainers or plimsoles. Children are permitted to wear small stud earrings; however, we ask that these are removed at home on PE days for safety.

During the winter months, we advise that your child wears long navy/black sports trousers or leggings.

Food and Drink:

Please remember to send your child to school with a bottle filled with either water or diluted juice that they will be able to access independently throughout the day. Fruit is also provided for your child at snack time but if your child prefers to bring their own, then please ensure that it is fruit only.

Ensure the snacks and drinks bottles are labelled with your child’s name.

Continue to order your school dinners online. Please see the office if you are unsure how to do this.

Homework:

Project homework will be given just before each half term break to complete over the school holidays. Your child will choose one of three choices that link to the project that will be covered after the school holidays.

Reading book: We follow the Little Wandle phonics scheme so your child will be bringing home ‘big cat’ reading books. These books will be changed every Monday and you will keep them for the whole week to support your child to become fluent within their reading. Please make sure your child reads as much as possible at home to support their reading progression and record when they have read in their reading record. They will receive a reading challenge sticker each time that they read at home so that they can be in for a chance of winning a book at the end of term if they get the most stickers.

You will also receive a ‘reading for pleasure’ book, which your child chooses and as these are not linked to your child’s reading level they may not be able to read them by themselves and so is purely for them to enjoy by either looking at independently or you read to them. These will be changed fortnightly but we recommend putting them in your child’s book bag every day so that they do not miss the opportunity to change their book.

Times Table Rockstars: Your child has a personal log in for time table rockstars that they can practice on if they wish, this is something we will be using in school as well. Please ask if you need a reminder of the log in details.

PLEASE ENSURE BOOK BAGS ARE LABELLED.

Website/Class Dojo:

Don’t forget to check our school website and Class Dojo for information on the projects, and photos on what fun and exciting things the children have been up to whilst learning. Our website address is www.spilsbyprimary.org.uk

If you need to contact us for any reason, you can find a contact form on the Year 1 Class Page on the school website. We are also at the gate each morning and afternoon but can sometimes be tricky to talk during busy times so we may need to arrange a more suitable time if the matter needs a more in-depth conversation.

We look forward to a very enjoyable year working with you and your child.

Yours Sincerely,

Miss Poxon

Year 1 Common Exception Words:

These are the common exception words that the children are expected to be able to read and use in writing by the end of Year 1. We do not test on these but is helpful that they have lots of opportunities to read and write these words at home.
