Number recognition, counting and ordering

Number recognition, counting and ordering 1

This week we are reinforcing our number recognition, counting accurately and matching amounts of objects to the correct numbers. We will also be moving onto ordering numbers.

Depending on your child's confidence and ability you may want to start with numbers to 5, moving on to numbers to 10 or work with numbers to 20.

We will be doing a range of activities to cover these objectives and you can go over or extend your child's learning depending on how they get on from day to day.

REMEMBER MOST OF THESE ACTIVITIES CAN BE DONE INDOORS OR OUTDOORS (WEATHER DEPENDENT).

Monday 4th May

(Today you will need some number cards and some objects).

*Start by counting to 20 with your child. You may want to play this video of counting to 20 which we use a lot in class as a warm up.

It would be a good idea to watch and join in with the video at the start of each maths session this week.

*Hide the number cards around the room or around the house or around the garden before you start the activity.

Give your child some objects and ask them to count them accurately, then go and find the matching number card.

Or ask your child to find a number and then count out the corresponding number of objects.

Tuesday 5th May
Similar to yesterday's session, but with a focus on writing the numbers.

*Give your child some objects and ask them to count them accurately, then write the corresponding number.

Or ask your child to write a number and then count out the corresponding number of objects.

Wednesday 6th May

Practise number recognition and counting using these games below.

Thursday 7th May

(You will need the number cards you used on Monday)

*Lay the number cards out randomly on the table and ask your child to order them from 0 to whichever number you are working to.

*When they are confident in this, remove some numbers and ask them to place them in order. This will reinforce the need to count accurately to order the numbers.
