Yummy fridge cake

What better way to practise writing instructions than having something to eat at the end of it!!

The writing focus for the week was to create instructions to make a fridge cake. The children concentrated hard on recognising and using features found in instructional texts and began to put their own ideas and ingredients into a recipe.

A sample portion was tested to help the creative juices flow. The children then planned what additional ingredients they would like to include and started putting their recipe and instructions together.

Parental support was then asked for to help test their writing and suggest improvements once the practical activity was under way.

The children worked collaboratively with their parent/adult helper to help explain why they had included different features and to edit as required when the instructions were followed.

A great session was had by all, with many a licking of spoons and munching on 'spare' ingredients after.
