Every primary school will receive £16,000 plus £10 per pupil every year until 2020 to support the delivery of and participation in sporting excellence. The school, in consultation with governors and trustees, always look for the best way to spend this money to ensure children have access to expertly delivered, wide ranging and engaging PE lessons and extra curricular sport, competitions and festivals.
Spilsby Primary has always prided itself on it's range of extra curricular sporting clubs. In our area we have, over the years, entered a range of competitions, in a variety of sports including football, high fives, rounders, kwik cricket, volleyball, golf, table tennis, athletics, swimming, cross country, hockey and gymnastics. Over the years we have had several county gymnastics champions along with successes in football, high fives, cross country, table tennis, kwik cricket and golf.
We have arranged for JB sports to come into schools to deliver some of the PE lessons and to up-skill the teachers in a range of sports. We will be continuing this arrangement over the next year. Spilsby Primary is also part of the KEVIA Sports Stars programme which enables our children to gain access to more fantastic coaching and competition opportunities.
On Thursday 14th June, Spilsby hosted the 2nd annual KYRA games. 7 schools attended a day of exciting sporting activities: Tri-golf, tennis, goal-ball, basketball, football, target-time and completed an obstacle course.
The event is held to encourage children to opt for sport in the future and is a participation event.
Running training with GB athlete Jennie Meadows
13 pupils from year 5 and 6 were invited to KEVIA to participate in attaining session with GB 800m athlete Jennie Meadows. The children were shown new running skills and took part in team activities to enable their most effective running method. The final activity was to run 600m around the running track. This took great resilience and control over breathing and pace.
The children also took great delight in having personal items autographed and their photo taken with Jennie.
Kwik Cricket Training and Tournament
Years 4 and 5 were invited to KEVIA to take part in some Kwik Cricket training and a mini tournament.
Two teams of 8 were taken and the children all joined in enthusiastically. They learnt how to bowl, both under and over arm, and did some wicket keeper practise.
There was then a 3 match 'Tournament', with Spilsby Team 1 (in red) coming out overall winners.
A fabulous sunny day had by all with a morning filled with Field events where the children got to participate in all the activities available to them which was followed up by a family picnic on the field before the afternoon of track events. Tennyson took the victory at the end, for the second year running.
Well done to everyone who took part and to the parents who came along to share the day with us making it extra special for the children.
